This Augmented Reality Headset Helps Pilots See Through Clouds
Rahul Kalvapalle — July 7, 2016 — Tech
A group of researchers and engineers working out of the Technical University of Munich have developed an innovative augmented reality headset that is designed to make it easier than ever for pilots to maintain a semblance of good visibility in difficult weather conditions where there's lots of cloud cover or heavy fog.
This augmented reality headset system makes use of LiDAR (light detection and ranging), which bounces light off surrounding terrain, analyzes the returning signals and then creates a 3D map of the region. The sensors will be attached to helicopters' landing skids.
This headset will enable helicopter pilots to more confidently pilot their choppers in challenging weather conditions, enabling them to better get to their destination in a safe and timely manner. It is set to first be made available to research helicopters.
