BMW has introduced a new plug-in hybrid model to its 5-series range, the 550e xDrive 2024. This model combines a six-cylinder gas engine and an electric motor to deliver a total output of 483 horsepower and 515 lb-ft of torque. The 550e xDrive can run on electric mode for up to 40 miles, based on global WLTP estimates, and has an all-wheel-drive system and an eight-speed automatic transmission. The battery pack has a capacity of 19.4-kWh and can be fully charged in about three hours using a Level 2 charger.
The starting price of the 550e xDrive 2024 from BMW is $74,795 and it will be available in the U.S. market in spring 2024. It is the second most powerful 5-series model, after the electric i5 M60 xDrive which costs $85,095. The 550e xDrive will face competition from other luxury plug-in hybrids such as the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, the Audi A6, and the Volvo S90. The 550e xDrive will also qualify for federal tax credits and state incentives, depending on where the buyer lives.
