From Crumpled Kitchen Tables to Literary Accordion Lamps
Michael Hines — February 3, 2012 — Art & Design
I never knew how much accordion players and furniture designers had in common until I saw all of these accordion furniture finds. The accordion is probably the last instrument you would expect to provide inspiration to designers; its crinkly and flexible shape isn't very conducive to designing smooth and rigid furniture.
A surprising amount of creatives have somehow managed to turn the accordion's weaknesses into strengths. These accordion furniture finds are certainly eye-catching, but what's most important is that they're functional. An extremely long and crinkled dresser or chair is not merely meant to be gawked at; it's meant to be used. The year 2012 could be the year accordion furniture takes off. I think the Mayan calendar said something about musical furniture being huge this year.
