Zhang Yimou by Hong Yi is an impressive portrait made out of ordinary socks. Inspired by hanging laundry on bamboo sticks in old residential alleyways, which Yi first encountered when she moved to Shanghai, she writes, "seeing something so traditional in a modern, pumping city like Shanghai was incredibly beautiful." Drawn to working with atypical art materials, she used 750 pairs of socks (shirts were too expensive) to create this masterpiece.
Choosing the person to portray was almost as inspired as the artwork itself. The famous Chinese film director, known for movies such as 'House of Flying Daggers' and 'Memoirs of a Geisha,' often reflects upon the beauty of the Chinese culture through traditional costumes and bamboo shoots. Zhang Yimou by Hong Yi is an extension of that focus.
