Undulating Eatery Facades

The Yufutoku Restaurant by ISSHO Architects Evokes the Machiya Style

The Yufutoku Restaurant takes a traditional architectural design and turns it on its head. According to the designers, it has the Machiya-style wooden louvers that traditional Japanese townhouse are known for, yet instead of stretching outwards like a mini temple, they swirl in an undulating fashion across the facade of the Yufutoku Restaurant.

Artistically sculptural, the Yufutoku Restaurant embraces a modern interpretation of the Japanese staple. Designed by ISSHO Architects, it is located in Tokyo, where such experimentations are more readily embraced. Since the facade is also paneled, different patterns of light spill through the exterior into the interior of the Yufutoku Restaurant.

The interior of the Yufutoku Restaurant itself is incredibly minimal. While the outside is dark, inside is light. Nevertheless, the facade is mimicked in the ceiling.
