The BoosterBuddy App Uses Elements of Video Game Design

Youth mental health is an important issue given the ability of mental illnesses to have a detrimental impact on the development of young people. One thing that's apparent about today's youth is that many of them turn to the Internet when looking for information or support, which is why a new app -- named BoosterBuddy -- aims to reach teens in their favored digital realm.

Developed by Canadian developers Robots & Pencils, BoosterBuddy uses video game design elements to help reinforce positive mental health habits. The app also provides a handy list of coping mechanisms, for example the use of controlled breathing exercises to combat anxiety attacks.

Given that an estimated 1.2 million Canadian youth live with mental illness but only 20 per cent get the help they need, this youth mental health app is set to play an important role in the digital realm so frequented by teenagers.
