'You're Accepted' is a new app that helps LGBTI youth gauge how accepting their friends and family would be if they chose to come out. For many teens, choosing whether or not to publicly identify as a member of the LGBTI community can be a stressful and potentially dangerous decision. This app helps youth get a better idea of how supportive those around them would be if they did decide to come out.
You're Accepted was created as part of a collaborative effort between the youth LGBTI group Minus18 and the creative agency George Patterson Y&R. The app allows users to send an anonymous message to their social media contacts asking how accepting they would be if someone they knew came out. Those in the user's social media network can then send positive messages of support back. The user will receive all the positive messages, but negative replies will not be visible. The user can then use these messages as a gauge for how supportive their friend and family would be of their sexuality.
The app is particularly important for youth, as this stage of life is when many come to terms with their sexuality.
