Instead of hooking up to a network of computers in order to run simulations to predict cardiac arrhythmias, a research at the University of Warwick has simply used an XBox 360 chip to provide his machinery with the same amount of power.
The former software engineer for Rare Ltd. (part of Microsoft games), Dr. Simon Scarle, has experience with XBox equipment and decided to try the system’s GPU (Graphical Processing Unit) to run his simulations.
By using the XBox 360 chip, Scarle was able to easily simulate how electrical excitations in the heart moved around damaged cardiac cells. I guess video games aren’t the worst thing that ever happened to the world!
