If you haven’t acquainted yourself with the world-known video artist Bill Viola, then it is high time to do so. Bill Viola is considered the best artist in the field of video installation. He has also been referred to as the Rembrandt of video art.
Bill Viola is an American artist who makes incredible, moving and interesting artworks using state of the art technology such as extreme slow motion footage of a scene, an emotion, or a spiritual/philosophical question. His work is presented on small size plasma panels to huge floors and ceiling screens, re-inventing, or rather blurring, the boundaries between photography and film.
I had the great pleasure of seeing his current exhibition in Rome which blew my mind. Quite frankly, I have never seen anything like it. Bill Viola’s work is a breathtaking experience.
His work ‘The Crossing’ features a man being consumed by flames on one side of a huge plasma screen and covered in water on the other side. The piece is a spiritual comment about realizing who you are beyond the body. By letting the body die and vanish a new self emerge, with the new consciousness.
