Architect, designer and MIT professor Neri Oxman designed this new 3D-printed wooden recliner called the Gemini Alpha. The multi-colored recliner uses 44 different composite materials encased by a wooden structure. The colors of the inner skin range from magenta to yellow and also range in translucency.
The inner skin of the Gemini Alpha is composed of synthetic rubber-like plastics that were printed by Stratasy's new Objet400 3D printer. Each of the materials used on the inner rubber skin have different levels of rigidity and colors. The Gemini Alpha is suppose to communicate the essence of a womb, both in comfort and design. The outer wooden structure follows the contours of the human body with a curving head piece that immerses the user and blocks out sound.
