Trend Hunter was happy to be invited to check out the White Cashmere 2012 Fashion collection. Former intern Trenton Millar was on the scene for the event and caught up with Canadian fashion designer Rodney Philpott to find out more about the event that combined toilet paper with fashion runways in support of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.
TH Hi, this is Trenton with Trend Hunter magazine. We're here at the White Cashmere toilet paper fashion show. We'll be watching the designs coming down the runway, and then go backstage to talk to some of the designers.
Rodney Philpott: Hi, this is Rodney Philpott.
TH: What's your favorite fall fashion?
Philpott: I think a lot of skinny pants for girls with big oversized droopy sweaters would be really hot.
TH: How do you reset to be creative?
Philpott: I guess like anything in life, sometimes an idea can be a good one or it can be terrible. Sometimes I'll start, I'll look at it and say that it's terrible, and I stop. Then I go back a few days later and work on it. Everything is a work in progress.
TH: How do you define cool?
Philpott: I think I define cool as anyone who is confident in what they're wearing. If you buy whatever someone else dictates and you don't look confident in it, you look like an idiot.
TH: So it's more of an attitude?
Philpott: It's more of an attitude. Some people can pull things off, and others can't. It's whatever your body feels comfortable in.
TH: What was your biggest challenge when making your toilet paper gown?
Philpott: I think the biggest challenge was trying to get the dress not to fall apart before putting it together. I fused together three or four layers and scrubbed through it. It took hours to scrub it out. It was a big mess in my house and my dogs left little pink footprints all over.
TH: What is your connection to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation?
Philpott: I've been pretty lucky in my life that I don't think that anyone I personally know has been touched by breast cancer. Knock on wood, I hope I never do have a personal connection. I like to give back to causes that are really important.
