Weave.X is the final project for this year's Architectural Association Summer DLAB program, a student architectural program that encourages experimental design. The structure, which was made through the collaboration of 21 architecture students from 11 different countries, is a 3D interwoven pattern made entirely of concrete.
In terms of functionality, the structure has a vague purpose, enveloping a nebulous space beneath it. What's more impressive about Weave.X, though, is how the concrete is used. Typically, concrete is a valuable building material because of its inexpensiveness and strength. However, the material is not known for sculptural integrity unless strengthened further with steel rebar. Through computational design and robot fabrication, Weave.X is able to stand on its own just with the use of concrete.
