The positive implications of wearable therapeutic tools are that they have the ability to effectively alleviate anxiety through sensation. Assistant Professor Heather Culbertson from the Department of Computer Science at USC embarked on a project to create a sensation-emitting sleeve that can ease anxiety in people suffering from it. In addition, the product can also be applied to people who risk feeling isolated.
The wearable therapeutic tool is equipped with "tiny speaker actuators that rise and fall to simulate different sensations." This movement, in turn, is able to create a "haptic illusion" and lead the user to feel as if they are experiencing real human touch.
Still in its prototyping stages, the wearable therapeutic tool shows promise as Heather Culbertson and her team search for the right haptic configuration to mimic human touch.
