The Water Calligraphy Device writes poetry while driving along the streets of China. The magnificent invention by Canadian artist Nicholas Hanna is a homage to Chinese poetry and traditions.
The device consists of a tricycle modified that allows the rider to type the Chinese characters into a computer that transmits the characters electronically to a set of valves. These valves then convert the characters into water droplets, which are released on the street as the tricycle moves forward.
The Chinese tradition of writing messages on roads and parks with water and a brush is quite common, the only difference is that the Water Calligraphy Device does it on wheels and with the help of a computer. This practice is certainly beautiful and genuine, encouraging the presence of art and literature in public spaces.
Hanna's brilliant project will be presented during Beijing Design Week from September 28 to October 3rd.
