Volkswagen debuted the Volkswagen Twin Up! at the 2013 Tokyo Motor Show. The German car company has been stealing eco-friendly auto headlines for the past few years with its 261 mpg XL1. The Twin Up! is like the XL1 in terms of fuel efficiency, with both cars sharing the same hybrid engine design. The Volkswagen Twin Up! pairs an 800cc diesel engine with a 35kW electric motor to achieve an astounding 214 mpg while seating four.
There have been a few eco cars designed to hit triple figures in mpg, but none look as normal (i.e. not like quirky concept cars) as the Volkswagen Twin Up!. The Twin Up! can go from 0-62 mph in 15.7 seconds and has a top speed of 87 mph in hybrid mode and 77 mph in electric mode. There is no word on whether Volkswagen intends to bring the Twin Up! from concept to reality, but if so, then it would certainly give all hybrids and EVs a run for the money.
