Volcanic Cooking Restaurants

The 'El Diablo' Restaurant Cooks Its Meals Over the Heat of a Volcano

This volcano restaurant located in the Canary Islands uses the unusual food preparation technique of harnessing the heat from 400 degrees Celsius lava.

Located on the island of Lanzarote, the El Diablo restaurant is built over top of a volcanic hole in the ground. To accomplish the difficult task of building such a unique dinning establishment, architects Eduardo Caceres and Jesus Soto laid down a foundation of nine layers of basalt rock to protect the building from the heat. A giant grill also sits over top of a hole where actual lava bubbles away only six feet below and actually cooks the food.

Anyone concerned about dining at this volcano restaurant can rest easy knowing that the volcano is currently dormant, and hasn't had a full-blown eruption since 1824. The restaurant also boasts a beautiful view of the Timanfaya National Park and a mountain range of 100 different volcanoes originating form the 18th century.
