German automaker Audi is currently testing a virtual assembly program that streamlines the process of analyzing functional design throughout the rapid prototyping process. The system allows for vehicle designers to assess the limitations of the physical assembly process, as well as plan out ways to minimize the strain on the human employees doing the work on the assembly line.
While 3D projection has been used by Audi's industrial engineers for some time, the new system involves an armband and goggles that let the engineers manipulate components of the vehicle in virtual space in order to get a better idea at how the pieces come together in real life. The system also makes use of an infrared Microsoft Kinect camera from an Xbox console and a Myo gesture control gaming band that is connected to Bluetooth.
