Vindskip is a hybrid merchant ship, designs for which were unveiled by Norway's Lade AS, that has a specially designed hull that helps it to harness the power of the wind. This enables it to reduce the burden on its engines, which are powered by natural gas, and save fuel. Researchers are currently engaged in developing an algorithm that will allow the ship's navigation system to use the most optimal and economical combination of power.
The Vindskip's hull is shaped like a symmetrical air foil. This causes oblique wind on its leeward side to travel a longer distance, effectively creating a vacuum that pulls the ship forward.
The first Vindskip freighter is expected to hit the seas in 2019 once model tank tests have been completed.
