Revamped Video-Sharing Apps

The New Vimeo iPhone App Makes Uploading On The Go Easier

In an effort to compete with YouTube and encourage more "on the fly" content, Vimeo has re-developed and re-launched its Vimeo iPhone app.

The video-based social networking site is known for high quality digital video content and is often used as an art-centric alternative to the more catch-all YouTube. It was established in 2004, but recently revamped its main page and hired a new CEO.

The new Vimeo iPhone app has three key differences from the old app. Firstly, it's designed to increase upload speeds by beginning the upload as soon as the video's title is inputted. Next, for users moving in and out of different WiFi networks, the video uploads can be paused and resumed at a later time. Lastly, while a video is uploading, users can still search and view other Vimeo videos while their upload continues in the background.
Trend Themes
1. High-quality Video Content - As social networking sites continue to compete, there is an opportunity to incorporate high-quality video content to differentiate from more general platforms.
2. Streamlined Upload Process - The ability to upload videos quickly and easily, using features such as pausing and resuming, is becoming increasingly important in the competitive video-sharing landscape.
3. Simultaneous Browsing and Uploading - Allowing users to continue browsing and viewing videos while their own uploads take place in the background is a trend that could improve the user experience.
Industry Implications
1. Social Media - The video-based social networking industry should consider incorporating features that allow for easy and high-quality video content sharing in order to differentiate and compete with more general platforms.
2. Mobile App Development - Developers should focus on creating mobile apps that allow for a seamless video upload process, and incorporate features such as pause and resume to improve the user experience.
3. Online Video Hosting - Companies in the online video hosting industry should look into offering features such as simultaneous browsing and uploading to attract users and improve engagement on their platforms.
