Statues come in all forms, but I’m willing to bet viewers haven’t seen one quite like the Vesalius Sculpture. Commissioned by the city of Terneuzen and crafted by master sculptor Thom Puckey, the Vesalius Sculpture features a naked man standing with his arms spread on his sides. This sounds fairly common as far as statues go, but what’s remarkable is that a huge falling piece of canvas also drapes on the man in a dynamic manner. The statue is almost evocative of Superman, if the comic book character were more artfully rendered.
The Vesalius Sculpture stands 4.8 meters tall and is 5 meters wide. The metallic canvas that cloaks the male figure also acts as support to hold up the structure. It’s a marvel that is best seen rather than described.
