Architectural studio Benthem Crouwel recently designed an urban underpass that can accommodate both pedestrians and cyclists. With more consumers choosing to commute on foot or via bicycle, this tunnel demonstrates one way to accommodate the needs of modern city dwellers.
The Cuyperspassage is a 360 foot long urban underpass that lies beneath the Amsterdam Central Station. The tunnel is separated into two streams with a partition in the middle. This allows one side to accommodate pedestrian traffic and another side for foot traffic. Both lanes are extremely wide and well-lit, making the underpass safe for those passing through. To give the tunnel a more modern design, Dutch graphic designer Irma Boom created a large mural with wall tiles from the city of Delft.
The Cuyperspassage demonstrates one way that cities are adapting existing infrastructure to accommodate the changing needs of residents.
