Unusual eyewear has been a catalyst for schoolyard bullying, often leaving children with high prescription glasses vulnerable to negative associations and stereotypes. In order to combat the negativity that's synonymous with myopia, Shenkar College graduate Tamar Canfi designed a collection of purposefully strange frames that highlight heavy prescriptions instead of hiding them.
Heavy prescriptions require thicker lenses and subsequently thicker frames to carry the extra weight. As someone who wore thick framed glasses as a child, the artist believes there is a dangerous stigma attached to the product, prompting this design project. The various steampunk-style glasses intentionally emphasize their large size in order to integrate the frames more seamlessly into the design world.
