A Design Engineering post-graduate student over at Imperial College London has managed to go ahead and craft together an extraordinarily unique violin that makes use of spider silk obtained from an Australian Golden Orb Spider.
This unique violin features three strands of golden silk that run down the center of the instrument and are securely embedded in its composite body. The violin body itself also makes use of silk fibers that are blended with a binding agent.
What's great about this violin is that when notes are played, the vibrations resonate through the trio of strands and into the hollow body to create a beautiful sound. The acoustics can be controlled by changing the way the silk fibers are mixed with binder material.It's a great example of intelligent design and engineering making use of nature's gifts.
