A unique UK walkway is being designed by Knight Architects. This Japanese fan-like design was not an easy concept by any means; this London, UK walkway uses hydraulics and the bridge opens and closes much like a Japanese fan. This bridge was designed so that pedestrians could cross the water conveniently, while using the very small amount that is available.
The cleverly designed bridge is 20 meters in length and only 3 meters wide; this is by no means a large bridge, but it was needed and in this case, creativity and extreme ingenuity were necessary. The UK walkway features a special raising mechanism that has been described by Knight Architects as "kinetic design." The bridge features five separate steel beams that make up the deck of the bridge, each one raising slightly less than the last, giving it the characteristic fan shape.
The new UK walkway also works with some counterweights and illuminates with an array of LED lights at night, making it even more aesthetically pleasing.
