The UK Royal Mint unveiled a revised £1 coin based on the dodecahedral design on the three penny piece that was used before the UK switched to the decimal system.
The current pound has been in circulation for over 30 years, and many counterfeit versions have been produced. The more elaborate design will hopefully make the currency more difficult to forge, and the mint claims the coin will "be the most secure circulating coin in the world to date."
The heads face has a bimetallic design that resembles the current £2 coin. To choose the design for the tails side, a public design competition will be held and the winner will have their design on the coin. The competition will be sometime before the coin is introduced in 2017.
