Unformed Figurine Sculptures

TRANS by Kohei Nawa Involves Scanning and Texture Mapping

TRANS by Kohei Nawa, an artist born in Osaka, Japan, is a sculpture series that appears to have been tampered with in one way or another. Although the shape takes on the familiar form of a human being, the details are lacking. Instead of a recognizable face, hands and more, the sculptures have been warped and morphed into abstract versions of classic porcelain figurines.

Currently showing at the Arario Gallery Cheonan in Korea, and set to debut in his hometown later this month, TRANS by Kohei Nawa was created using a computer and scanner. Each sculpture began with a 3D scanning of a person or an object. From there a computer technique known as texture mapping was applied. Nawa says, "The completed form of the model with fluid threedimensional surface is like a form that is parallel with this world, or a form which any subject or being can have."
