With the consumption of bottled water more than doubling in the last decade, plastic bottles are blocking up the planet, an increasingly worrying problem. But these environmentally unfriendly containers could be a thing of the past thanks to some green thinking companies.
Biota Spring Water â€" on sale at US supermarket Publix - looks and feels like it comes in a plastic bottle, but surprisingly the container's actually made from corn. The new, hightech material is just as effective as plastic but - fantastically - it's biodegradable. And Biota's bottles are being closely followed by conscientious British mineral water company Belu who are working on the manufacture of containers made from biodegradable plastic that's made from rice, potato sugars and beetroot. Rumours that these bottles are tastier than their contents are unconfirmed.
