Art Vending Machines

The Kunstautomat in Berlin Dispenses Miniature Masterpieces

If you have a sudden desire for art, the city of Berlin has a retail option to help you fill the void in the Kunstautomat. This innovative vending machine was customized by Lars Kaiser, an art dealer for the Kunsttick agency, to dispense miniature masterpieces instead of soda, candy or cigarettes.

Kunstautomat machines are more colorful than standard vending machines; they often match the color scheme at their destination, so you'll have to look closely to see them. Each mini masterpiece costs 2 euros, and the art is contained in packaging similar to a cigarette carton. You may find photos, drawings, small sculptures or poems. Some pieces are part of a limited series, while others are a one-off creation.

The art sold in the Kunstautomat comes primarily from emerging artists, although famed painter Olaf Thiede has created work for the vending machine.
