The Tangible Media Group is a section of the MIT Media Lab, which has developed a shape-shifting material called ‘Unimorph.’ The material is actually made into a thin film and can be used for multiple purposes.
The film is comprised of thermoelectric copper and thermally sensitive polyethylene. Through the use of these temperature-activated materials, the film is able to change and move. Each film can be unique in its own way by changing the thickness of the copper layer, which will change the shapes due to the different reaction from the temperature alterations.
The Tangible Media Group designed the material to be able to twist, curl, bend and take on shapes such as pyramids, flowers and cones. While the prototype is still being adjusted the material can be used for things from iPad covers to small discrete reading lamps.
