Manon Kühne recently won the student category at the Crystal Cabin Awards for an ingenious device called the HeatRest. One of the biggest problems with flying economy is getting comfortable in a standard airplane seat. This device could make the experience slightly more pleasant by keeping each passenger's head supported while they rest.
The HeatRest is a device created by Kühne in conjunction with Zodiac Aerospace’s Human Factors and Ergonomics Lab. The device itself is similar to a travel pillow and it can be fixed onto any standard airplane seat. Once attached, two wings fold out from the sides to create a U-shape around the passenger's head. Stretchy fabric runs across the back creating a supportive hammock-like contraption that prevents the passenger's head from slipping off to the side.
Although the device is just a prototype, airlines are increasingly looking for ways to make their cabins more comfortable for passengers.
