Originally developed for the US Navy during World War II, the Quonset hut is reimagined into the Caterpillar. The steel structure is nearly 200 feet long and 23 feet high. Developed by Philip Kafka, several simple Quonset-hut-based residences are being transformed into liveable spaces.
The structure is shaped in a half-cylinder and spans seven vacant residential lots. The building is divided into eight units, which range from 750 to 1,350 square feet. Each unit is equipped with at least 12 windows to provide ample sunlight from sunrise to sunset. Complete with two large open spaces on each end, intersected with a plywood-based central core, the units offer a full kitchen space, a bathroom, and a closet.
The Caterpillar provides high-quality living spaces for reasonable prices.
