Evolution of Olympic Torch Lightings

10 Fascinating Cauldrons

Olympic torches are used to light the official Olympic flames which are held inside cauldrons.

Since cauldrons date back to the original Olympic Games in ancient Athens, they are an still important part of the games today.

(Aside: the torch relay was created by the Nazis.)

Two of the most spectacular in my memory were in Barcelona, which was lighted by a simple bow and arrow shot into the cauldron; and the other was when world famous boxer Muhammad Ali, suffering from Parkinson's Disease, surprised the crowd. From the simplistic to the highly complicated structure, the Olympic cauldron is the centerpiece of many memories.
