La Matriz is a temporary shelter designed by students attending the Pontifical Catholic University as a portable post-disaster home for consumers left stranded in South America. The house is designed with the aesthetic of an igloo and made from convertible aluminum shingles designed to provide warmth and a dry place to stay.
The igloo is made up of metallic scaffolding that is shaped in curved diamonds to create a sturdy and weather-resistant structure. The inside is lined with foam insullation to keep the space warm and heated while the petal scaffolding offers a natural cooling system. The igloo is entirely flat packed so it can be quickly shipped to consumers in need via car or helicopter and set up instantly to provide temporary shelter for those that have recently lost their home.
