Tandem bicycles are great for riding in pairs and groups, but riding one alone just looks plain silly. California-based Calfee Design has built a tandem bike that can be easily converted into a single. The bikes were recently displayed at the North American Handmade Bicycle Show.
In the dual configuration, the seat stays are detached below the 'jet engine' and the back half of the bicycle is removed. In the bikes' single configuration, the top tube ends curves out behind the seat tube, making the bike look like it has a jet engine. The frame of the bike is made out of carbon fiber.
Calfee Design built the convertible tandem bike for a couple who wanted to be able to occasionally ride their tandem bike on their own without looking ridiculous. The convertible tandem will set you back around $25,000.
