Buddha Boxers wanted to make sustainable boxer briefs after discovering that it takes 2,000 litres of water to grow enough cotton to create a single pair of boxer briefs—that's about 50 bathtubs of of water that needs to be transported to the cotton fields to grow the material used for cotton underwear. Cotton farms also use 2.4% of the worlds farmland, but 11% of pesticides sold.
Bamboo is different. It's the fastest growing plant on the planet, capable of reaching heights of up to three feet a day. Bamboo is also incredibly resilient; it typically doesn't need irrigation water, pesticides or fertilizer. And it grows in a wide variety of climates around the world.
Bamboo viscose is a fabric derived from bamboo. It's a natural fiber made from plant-based cellulose and will decompose in the right conditions. It's also very breathable. Bamboo viscose allows much more air circulation than cotton, which helps keep the body noticeably more fresh. This breathability has the added benefit of allowing evaporated moisture to be quickly circulated away, reducing odor from humidity-loving bacteria.
In order to bring costs down, Buddha Boxers knew that it had to simplify the product features without compromising on comfort or functionality. Though its design removes non-essential features, it did add two vertical ridges along each leg to reduce crease build-up and minimize ride-up.
