Gloomy Surrealist Art

'These Predicaments' Are Subverted Fairy Tales

These surreal, thought-provoking, oil and glissee paintings by David Michael Stoupakis are an amalgam of Alice in Wonderland imagery mixed with Salvador Dali with a dash of Tim Burton thrown in for good measure. They're part of a collection called 'These Predicaments,' which depict a fairy tale world turned on its head.

In 'These Predicaments,' a giant girl bursts through her dollhouse, a prematurely-aged young boy holds a railroad of memories of events to come and a bound young boy appears perched on the edge of a tower of books teetering over an abyss. Predicaments, indeed! Would anyone want to share a meal with the happy-looking guests at this macabre last supper?

Stoupakis was born in Brighton, Massachusetts and is the son of first generation Greek-Italian artist parents.

Also in the gallery are a number of Stoupakis' other works, including 'The Flood,' 'One King's Downfall,' 'Sleepwalker,' 'The Bad Stuff,' 'The Tea Party,' and 'Temptation.'
