Boston-based Spike Aerospace and Denver-based company Boom have teamed up to create innovative new supersonic flight concept designs that aim to make it possible for aircraft to travel at speeds faster than sound whilst reducing the disturbing and dangerous sonic booms that result from attaining such speeds.
The technology could potentially see the light of the day in the early 2020s, and is being mooted for use in flights from Paris to Dubai in 3.5 hours and London to Hong Kong in 5.5 hours.
Supersonic flights -- at least in the passenger travel realm -- like those once offered by Concorde were only available for trans-oceanic air routes where sonic booms wouldn't disturb people. Until that problem gets resolved, supersonic flights will only be restricted to such routes. However, the Quiet Supersonic Flight technology looks to be a great way to battle this, potentially opening up supersonic air routes over much of the world.
