This Art Shows Detrimental Effects of Society’s Beauty Standards

Artist Maria Jo Cabezas created this series of superimposed body images to reveal the effects that society's beauty standards have on youth.

The images feature both men and women in black and white portraits holding up images of the way they think certain parts of their body should look. There is a large range of topics covered in this series, which include anorexia, bulimia, over-exercising, facelifts and waist-shaping. An example of one of the powerful images is a woman standing up who has just inhaled a deep breath. Her gaze is towards the ceiling, while her hands are holding an illustrated image of her waist being shaped by an intensely tiny corset.

While this is an ongoing issue, this highly creative superimposed body image collection is a powerful way to raise awareness of a relevant issue.
