When people first lay their eyes on this piece of stone furniture, it would not be surprising if they thought that it was a historical work of art rather than a symbol of live art. The stone furniture piece is strong, sophisticated and full of political potential, which is something that can easily be left up to individual interpretation. Yet it was created for a larger show, Counting the Rice, which was put together by Yugoslav artist Marina Abramovic.
Created in collaboration with Italian brand Moroso and the architect Daniel Libeskind, the piece of stone furniture was used by participants who were invited to sit for a minimum of six hours as they separated and counted out lentils and grains of rice. That seat would have become quite uncomfortable over time.
