Rob Oechsle a.k.a. Okinawa_Soba is an American expatriate living in Okinawa. He’s posted an amazing collection of Japanese stereo photography on Flickr. Pink Tentacle has taken some of Oechsle’s stereoview images and made them 3-D for online viewing using GIF animation.
GIF animation doesn’t render stereo photography like a stereoscope or View-Master does, but it approximates the stereographic effect. The current technology of GIF animation allows viewers to appreciate the marvelous 3-D images Japan recreated from what was at the time, its own state-of-the-art technology.
