Illusionary Retail Displays

'Sous le Ciel' is the Latest Installation at Le Bon Marché in Paris

French retailer Le Bon Marché has unveiled a new installation in Paris known as 'Sous le Ciel.' Conceived and completed by artist Leando Erlich, this amazing installation is perched over the iconic escalators and provides an impressive illusion that complements the atypical aesthetic of the store beautifully. The idea behind the piece was to maintain the emblematic elements of the store with subtle, but striking, integration. The escalator installation is complemented by a glass ceiling that features lights and colors that react to the season, weather and time.

Sous le Ciel is not the first art installation presented at Le Bon Marché, as the retail center has previously worked with artist such as Ai Wei Wei and Chiharu Shiota. Ai Wei Wei's 2016 installation featured paper animals suspended in the air. When Chiharu Shiota was given use of the space, she suspended a fleet of woven white boats around the entire shopping center. The installations are clearly meant to draw in customers, but are also done to celebrate the combination of art and architecture in an iconic Parisian building.
