Smart Traffic Lights Avoid Inching Forward When Waiting at the Light

Designer Chang-Chi Shih upgrades an old system into smart traffic lights, making it more convenient for drivers.

It’s not uncommon to see cars constantly inch closer and closer at the red lights like they’re antsy to get somewhere. While some drivers may keep their eyes locked on the pedestrian crosswalk count down, others focus on the red to ensure quick passage. The traffic-friendly lights are redesigned to include, like the crosswalk signals, a counter that shows people how much time is left until the light turns green. While this new smart traffic light makes it increasingly easy to instantly speed through the intersections, drivers should still drive cautiously and observe the road for pedestrians and other obstacles as well. The programmable signal can also be used for other traffic sign.
