Autonomous grocery stores aren't necessarily a new concept, but a concept that lends itself well to consumer needs during the COVID-19 pandemic -- as a result, Seoul announced that five grocery stores will be selected to serve in a 'Smart Supermarket' pilot that will begin later in the year.
Currently, many South Korean convenient stores are run autonomously, which will serve as the inspiration behind the technology for the grocery pilot. During the day, the store will be staffed with limited employees, but at night the store will be run entirely by technology. This gives shoppers the opportunity to select their own hours to better avoid crowds, while having the option to limit human interaction in a post-pandemic world.
