Hands-Free Shopping Carts

The Kinect-Powered Whole Foods Cart is High-Tech

Retailers are consistently trying to make shopping more convenient and fun for shoppers, and now, the Kinect-powered Whole Foods cart is making a giant step in this direction.

The cart uses Microsoft Kinect Sensor for Windows, and there is a tablet attached to each cart. When the customer walks into the store, the motorized cart can identify him from his loyalty card and follow him or her around the store. Then, as the customer buys products, it simultaneously scans them in and crosses them off the customer's shopping list (which he would have pre-loaded). Once the shopping list is complete, the cart will inform the customer, and the customer can check out (using credit card information) in the cart itself. No need for joining the check-out lines!

Another great thing about the Kinect-Powered Whole Foods cart is that it makes sure to take care of your dietary needs and allergies. Suppose you had specified nut-free in your shopping list, and the product you chose from the store has nuts, it will inform the customer, and also indicate where he can find products that suit this requirement.

The smart shopping carts, developed by Microsoft along with developer Chaotic Moon, are still in the process of development and testing. When it is done, it will take a lot of hassle out of grocery shopping.
