The Smart Highway is a futuristic concept that incorporates glow-in-the-dark components into the road to make them safer for drivers. Although this would seem like something straight out of a sci-fi movie, the Smart Highway is set to be realized mid-November 2013 in the Netherlands. In addition to the glowing roads, it will boast Dynamic Paint, Interactive Lights, an Induction Priority Lane and Wind Lights.
A collaborative effort between Designer and innovator Daan Roosegaarde and Heijmans Infrastructure, the glow-in-the-dark effect of the Smart Highway will be achieved through treatment with a special foto-luminising powder. This powder will charge in the daylight and then illuminate the road for up to 10 hours at night. It won Best Future Concept by the Dutch Design Awards
