Chicago-based Skender is launching a new ambitious plan to change the way people view housing by focusing on simple construction. With a new assembly line, this new apartment factory will produce standardized apartment units that can easily be bolted into a steel-framed stack on a building site. The new Skender factory hopes to cut construction costs by as much as 40% and will speed up this process by as much as 20%.
Skender has already shown off the first prototype: a white-walled bedroom equipped with a Nest thermostat, a Crate & Barrel two-platform bed and a scent diffuser. The first of the apartments are expected to roll out in 2019 and will be transported for assembly on a 110-unit condo building in the city's West Loop.
