This immersive black and white photo series provides a brief yet enlightening glimpse into the world of East London skateboard culture.
Shot over the span of an entire year, photographer Ian Kenneth Bird found each of his subjects through personally meeting and engaging with fellow skateboarding enthusiasts in the area. In doing so, he was given not only an inside glimpse into the often chaotic nature of the sport itself, but also those who choose to immerse themselves within it.
These elegant black and white portraits succeed in portraying skateboard culture in such a way that the skaters themselves take center stage, rather than the act of skateboarding itself. We are given a better understanding of the real people behind the boards and are perhaps even forced to question any of our own preconceived notions we may have had about the sport.
