Intel has confirmed a new line of 'Sierra Forest' Xeon processors that will offer better core density than its competitors in the workstation space. The first-gen efficiency Xeon, Sierra Forest, will come with an incredible 144 cores, thus offering up to 288 cores when used in dual-chip systems. Intel has previously stated that Sierra Forest will be the first Xeon processors using only optimized "efficiency" cores and no inefficient "performance" cores. The company even teased the chip in a demo at its event.
Intel has also revealed that tests of virtual broadband network gateways (vBNG) using 3rd Generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors show up to 20% better performance and up to 56% improvement in performance per dollar processor spending compared to the previous CPU generation. This suggests that Sierra Forest will be some of the best processors on the market for workstation powerhouse PCs.
