A group of researchers and engineers led by professor Shree K. Nayar at Columbia Engineering have gone ahead and developed a truly unique, flexible sheet camera that makes use of high-tech elastic optics systems to make it possible to bend and alter a camera's field of view.
This technology is based on a special array wherein the focal length of each lens changes depending on the degree of curvature. As the lens bends, the field of view is boosted. The end result is an adaptive array of lenses that can produce high quality photos over a broad range of curvatures.
This flexible sheet camera could have a wide array of applications, and could be used to create wraparound cameras for use in vehicles, electric poles, lampposts and even personal use.
