We are in an era where shape-shifting architecture is not a truly incomprehensible idea. This is the approach design firm Diller Scofidio + Renfro and Rockwell Group — the collaborating architect, took when creating the concept of The Shed which is located in the NY neighborhood of Hudson Yards. The building boasts a flexible layout that paves the way with high-tech architectural components. The establishment is envisioned to fulfill the purpose of an artistic hub that is interdisciplinary and promotes a collaborative environment. In a sense, the activation seeks to "accommodate the unknown future of art."
Among the many open galleries, the 'creative lab,' the flexible event spaces and the 500-seat theatre, the most interesting aspect of Diller Scofidio + Renfro's design is its shape-shifting architecture. The roof is made to be exceptionally dynamic and accommodating as it is able to extend and engulf the adjoining courtyard to maximize indoor entertainment spaces when needed.
